 Health Care Action Alert

We have a pro-life statesman in Washington.

And he’s a Democrat.

Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak and eleven other pro-life Democrats are threatening (again) to bring down health care because of the abortion mandate embedded in the final bill. Without their votes, the legislation likely will not pass.

Negotiations stemming from last week’s “Health Care Summit” between President Obama and Republican congressional leaders led to no substantial changes in the debate.  Federal abortion funding remains embedded in the Senate bill, which is now the version that proponents intend to pass through the “reconciliation” process (aka “the nuclear option”).

President Obama said on Wednesday that the time for talking is over, and the time for action is now.  He meant that his colleagues in Congress should go ahead and use reconciliation.

But this morning, Bart Stupak gave a stunning interview on “Good Morning America” (see http://abcnews.go.com/GMA/).  When George Stephanopoulos asked bluntly, ‘Are you and your colleagues prepared to bring down health care over this one issue?’  Stupak courageously replied: “We’re prepared to take responsibility.”  He said, “Let’s face it.  I want to see healthcare.  But we’re not going to bypass the principles of belief that we feel strongly about.”

In the same interview, pro-abortion HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius predictably asserted the familiar false mantra: “There will be no federal funding for abortion.… This bill does not change the status quo in America on abortion funding.”  Shame on you, Madam Secretary.

Action:

1. If you are in a congressional district with a pro-life Democrat, you must call your representative and urge him or her to stand firm to the end of this debate against the pro-abortion pressures in Washington.

2. Please pray for Bart Stupak and his courageous team of pro-life Democrats.
